Lee Tunnel Abbey Mills Culverts. Two tunnels in London, which collectively capture an average of 39 million tonnes of sewage a year from existing combined sewer.

The Lee tunnel is the first of two tunnels in London, which collectively capture an average of 39 million tonnes of sewage a year from existing combined sewer overflows which are polluting the Thames. These combined sewer overflows were built by the Victorians and have been in use for over 150 years. As part of this scheme,

Ward & Burke Construction were contracted to:

  • construct a 4m x 3m internal concrete culvert (CU1).
  • A 7m high connection culvert (CUF) between the new Tunnel Shaft F and the existing Thames Water Assets at Abbey Mills Pumping station.
