Client: Whissell Contracting Ltd
Construct concrete caisson and microtunnel for the 37th Street SW Storm Trunk Relocation.
In September 2015, Ward and Burke Microtunnelling were awarded a sub-contract to construct a single 10.4m ID concrete caisson and 420m of 3000mm OD microtunnel for the 37th Street SW Storm Trunk Relocation. The contract required for the shaft on the northern end of the tunnel section to remain in place for a period of 5 years. A concrete caisson shaft was constructed at this location to both facilitate the launching of the TBM and the requirements of the contract.
The ground presented mixed conditions, including:
- 320 m through shale and 100 m through glacial till, which included silts, sands, gravels and boulders below the water table.
- No issues were encountered during tunneling operations.
- The microtunnelling pipe was manufactured by Munro Precast in Ontario, and shipped via road to the project site in Calgary, Alberta.
