Ward and Burke are currently looking to recruit a Civil Design Engineer to be based primarily in our London office. They will join a small and growing multi-disciplinary design team who are focused on doing temporary and permanent engineering design for work Ward and Burke are directly delivering within the Thames Water and Southern Water areas of operation. We are looking for candidates with an engineering degree and 1 – 3 years of site and/or design experience on civil engineering projects, ideally within the water industry.


Their day-to-day responsibilities will include:

  • Completing all aspects of Civil engineering design for projects: Briefs, calculations, reviews of other’s designs, risk assessments, drawings, etc.
  • Coordinating with the CAD Team to create and review drawings / models of their designs.
  • Coordinating with site delivery teams to get input on constructability and preferred methods of construction.
  • Input into various reviews of designs, such as HAZOPS, ALMs, Stage Gate reviews.
  • Completing geotechnical reports and arranging ground investigation works for projects.
  • Completing site visits to discuss works and preferred techniques with operatives, review designs and installation, and receive feedback on how to improve future designs.


We are looking for candidates who:

  • Have experience of using AUTOCAD for 2D (Essential) and 3D (Optional) modelling.
  • Have experience using Finite element analysis software (any type).
  • Be proficient at the use of Microsoft Office software, such as Excel, Word, PowerPoint, etc.
  • Have a good use of Design standards, principles of designs, and application of the Eurocodes / British Standards to their work.
  • Be familiar with Geotechnical design.
  • Be familiar with reinforced concrete design.
  • Have a full UK driving license and are happy to travel/have their own transport for site visits within the Thames Water and Southern Water areas of operation.


The successful candidate will also:

  • Have good written and verbal communication skills, so that they can explain their work to different groups of people such as clients, operatives on site, and project management teams.
  • Be self-motivated and driven.
  • Have a good attention to detail and be thorough with their work.
  • Be well organised and capable of multi-tasking (working on different projects at the same time).


For successful candidates we’re offering the following package:

  • Base Location: Our newly renovated office: 25 – 26 Ivor Place, London, NW1 6HR
  • Salary: £ 40k – 45k Pa depending on experience.
  • Start date: Flexible depending on candidate notice period.
  • Hours: 08:00 – 18:00 (Mon – Friday) with 1 hour lunch per day.
  • Mileage for travel to sites other than the office, paid at 45p/mile (for the first 10k miles per year).
  • Pension (company matched 3%).
